NIHSCIS must be the first point of contact for all face to face interpreting.
 
The Belfast Trust provides a Regional Interpreting Service for all Health & Social Care Organisations throughout Northern Ireland.

 

The primary aim of the service is to significantly improve access to Health and Social Services for members of black and minority ethnic communities in Northern Ireland who do not speak English either as a first or competent second language.

 

As the only health specialised service in the country, the NIHSSIS should be the first point of call for any practitioners, from any of the Health Trusts in Northern Ireland, when the need of using a face-to-face Interpreter is identified.

 

The Regional Interpreting Service is based at Belfast Trust,  1 st Floor Graham House,  Knockbracken Healthcare Park, Saintfield Road, Belfast, BT8 8BH 

 

The Regional Interpreting Service provides:

  • 24 hour Service

  • Face-to-face Interpreting only

  • Free-of-charge to Health & Social Care practitioners and patients

  • Has 318 Trained, professional interpreters

  • Has interpreting in 36 Registered Languages

  • The most requested Languages - Polish, Lithuanian, Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin) and Portuguese

  • “working well with interpreters” training sessions for users 

  • a training DVD entitled “working well with interpreters”

  • the Certificate in Community Interpreting, level 3 accredited, training for interpreters who wish to work within health & social care organisations.

 

Arranging an Interpreter 

Stages
  1. Identify Interpreter need.
    You can use the language identification cards to identify the need for an interpreter and the language requested. (see below)

  2. Arranging a face-to-face Interpreter for a pre-booked appointment (please see staff guidelines for working with Interpreters page).

  3. Arranging an Interpreter for an emergency appointment - Please call the Interpreting Service in the first instance to check if an interpreter is available. If NIHSCIS is unable to provide, please use Telephone Interpreting (The Big Word) or contact one of the agencies listed below.

  4. Booking and Preparing for dealing with Interpreters.

NICEM Training Programme for Community Interpreters

NICEM offers courses in partnership with Making Training Work, a training consultancy based in London specialising in language and basic training skills. On successful completion of the different courses candidates are invited to join NICEM's Register of Community Interpreters and Translators, which provides interpreting services to the statutory and voluntary sectors in areas such as social security, healthcare and education.

As of 17 th June 2011, ownership of Flex Language Services has been transferred to Ortus (www.ortus.org).   Ortus is a business development agency based in Belfast and they are committed to developing and expanding our services within Northern Ireland, we will be rebranding and will have a new logo and website very soon.  
 
The translation and interpreting service can facilitate when there is a need for help with the translating of general company literature, technical or other specialist documents, or interpreting during conferences or company visits by customers from abroad.

The South Tyrone Empowerment Programme (STEP) was established in 1997. It is a not for profit community development organisation based in Dungannon, Northern Ireland.
 
STEP Training and Learning provides interpreting and translation services throughout Northern Ireland, with currently 250 interpreters available across the region, our interpreting service covers 30 languages. Languages range from Russian to Tetum, Lithuanian to Polish.
