  • Provides face-to-face Interpreting only
  • Provides a free-of-charge service to Health & Social Care practitioners and patients    
  • Has 80 Trained, professional interpreters 
  • Provides interpreting in 32 Registered Languages 
  • The most requested Languages - Polish (more than ½ the requests), Lithuanian, Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin) and Portuguese 
  • “working well with interpreters” training sessions for users  
  • Provides a training DVD entitled “working well with interpreters”   
  • provides the Certificate in Community Interpreting, level 3 accredited, training for interpreters who wish to work within health & social care organisations.  
  • Provides a free-of-charge service to Health & Social Care practitioners and patients

NICEM Training Programme for Community Interpreters

NICEM offers courses in partnership with Making Training Work, a training consultancy based in London specialising in language and basic training skills. Making Training Work designs and delivers a range of courses that enable those disadvantaged within the labour market to develop their skills and secure qualifications and employment. The trainers work with small groups thus providing the trainees with a high level of personal tutorial support throughout the training process.
  • Basic Community Interpreting

    Course Content

    • Identification of needs in Black and minority ethnic communities.

    • The role of the community interpreter

    • Models, modes and techniques of interpreting

    • Advocacy and intervention skills

    • Procedures for interpreting assignments

    • Confidentiality

    • Providing cultural information

    • Specialist language of public service

    • Challenging discrimination and racism

    On successful completion of the different courses candidates are invited to join NICEM's Register of Community Interpreters and Translators, which provides interpreting services to the statutory and voluntary sectors in areas such as social security, healthcare and education.
