Background

There are around 140 Koreans living in Northern Ireland today. Many have come as a result of Korean companies. Often contracts last from three to four years. Some have decided to live in Northern Ireland on a permanent basis. Those who come over with small companies will tend to stay longer.

Most Koreans are settled around the Belfast area, Newtownabbey, Lisburn, Ballymena, Carryduff, Carrickfergus and Fortwilliam. Korean companies first began to establish factories in 1989. Some of the Korean companies in Northern Ireland are Daewoo, Electro Components, Tasunga, Radix Telecom, Europa Tools, Shumax, Electronics and Sinax, which are located all over the region.

Most Koreans in Northern Ireland are originally from Seoul and Gumi.
