Festivals and Customs

The Latin Americans celebrate many festivals but four specific festivals hold special significance.
  1. Dia de Los Muertas (Day of the Dead)
Takes place on the 1 st and 2 nd of November. This is a family event; where family members visit relative's graves to clean them, paint them and lay flowers.

  2. 'Semanta Santa' (Holy Week)
Starts on Palm Sunday and ends on Easter Sunday. During this week, the people of Guatemala spend time remembering Jesus' death and resurrection through a series of processions and passion plays.

  3. Carnaval (Carnaval – also called Marti Gras in the United States)
Held in November. This is an annual event across Brazil. It is essentially a festival/party with music, dancing and parades. One of the biggest and best examples of Carnaval takes place in Rio de Janeiro.

  4. Santiago de Apostol (Festival of St.James)
Held in Puerto Rico on July 25 th. This is a blend of different traditions, Africans, Spanish and Tainos (Native Puerto Ricans) and on this day there is a procession held with music and dancing.
