Background

There has been a Pakistani Community living in Northern Ireland since the 1970's. The majority of these families lived in England before settling in Northern Ireland. Most Pakistani's have settled in the Craigavon area, where many families live in Legahory, Waringstown, Portadown, Bleary and Lurgan.

Many individuals have been living in Northern Ireland now for 25-30 years and most of their children were either born here or have lived a large part of their lives in this country.

An estimate of two thirds of the Pakistani community in Northern Ireland would be traders, with around one third health, academic and other professionals.

Some estimates have put the number of the Pakistanis in Northern Ireland higher than 700, at around 1000 or more.
