Festivals and Customs

Whilst there are no specific festivals which the Travellers celebrate or observe it is worth noting that religious events such as 1st Holy Communion, Confirmation and Marriage are extremely important events and are seen as an opportunity for families to get together with members travelling from throughout Ireland and Great Britain to attend weddings. Young people making their 1st Holy Communion or Confirmation can expect to receive money from all the family members.

Nomadism

Traditionally Irish Travellers pursued a nomadic way of life. Both within the island of Ireland and beyond. For a variety of reasons, including the absence of any Traveller specific accommodation which can meet this lifestyle.

Self Defined Extended Family Groups

The extended family group is the key unit of social cohesion.Within the Travellers a patriarchy system exists with men acting as head of the household and the sole bread winner.

Inter Marriage

Most Irish Travellers marry amongst their own people. While this is not exclusive it still remains the overwhelming choice of most members of the community.

Self-Ascription and ascription by other Irish Travellers are an ethnic group by virtue of the fact that they so designate themselves and are recognised by others.
