Religion

  • The vast majority of Travellers are Roman Catholic. Many are very traditional in their beliefs and are anxious to receive a visit from a priest or a member of a religious order. Clergy can be held in considerable esteem and it is not unusual for Travellers to call on the services of a passing Protestant minister if he or she is willing to pray with them.

  • Religious relics and pictures may be given to staff to be attached to pillows and around the bed. Holy water may be sprinkled from time to time. If there is any anxiety about hygiene in regard to this practice staff may suggest that the chaplain will bless some sterilised water, which can then be used.
