Special Days

Easter

Christians remember the death of Jesus on Good Friday with great sorrow, but on Easter Sunday celebrate his resurrection with great joy. Easter concludes the fasting season of Lent and coincides with Spring in the Northern Hemisphere, marked by flowers, the symbolism of eggs and other indications of new life. Special services are held in Christian churches throughout this season. The date of Easter is variable, falling somewhere between late March and late April.

Other special days in Christianity include:
  •  Epiphany (Manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles) – 6 January

  • Week of Prayer for Christian Unity – 18-25 January

  •  Ash Wednesday (Start of the Lenten fast) – about 6 weeks before Easter

  • Palm Sunday (Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem) – Sunday before Easter Day

  • Good Friday (the crucifixion of Jesus) – Friday before Easter Day

  • Pentecost/Whit Sunday (Coming of the Holy Spirit) – about 6 weeks after   Easter

  • Advent (originally a penitential season) – the 4 weeks leading to Christmas

  • Christmas day (the birth of Jesus) – 25 December
