Man sentenced over racial insult

A 47-year-old man who racially abused a doctor at Altnagelvin Hospital has been jailed for disorderly behaviour.

Police were called to the home of Patrick Farren, at Stowneburn Place, following reports of a man acting aggressively towards ambulance crew.

He was then taken the hospital where he used racist language towards the doctor.

Farren then shouted "Free Nelson Mandela" and began struggling with police.

Sentencing him at Londonderry Magistrates Court on Monday, the district judge described the incident as "nasty and distasteful".

He sentenced Farren to three months in prison, to run consecutively with the seven month sentence he is currently serving.
